Project Icebreaker is an integrated software maintenance unit that dramatically lowers the cost and complexity of database and operating system maintenance and support. The integration of the Ingres 2006 database with the Linux operating system enables a single, easy-to-manage environment where the operating system becomes transparent and support is provided by Ingres as a unified maintenance stream – a capability unique to Ingres. Closed-source vendors have struggled and failed to provide this capability to its customers. Project Icebreaker is meant to help customers with the lack of integration, multiple maintenance streams and painful installs associated with traditional software stacks. Other benefits include ease of installation and lower costs of ownership due to no license fees and better deployment of time and resources. Project Icebreaker also includes support for virtualization technologies and extensible management and support framework that makes room for new software components to be included in the single maintenance stream support. Licensed under the GPL 2, Project Icebreaker runs on any x86-compatible, 32-bit capable, server hardware appropriate for Linux. Because of the collaborative and innovative nature of open source, Ingres and rPath were able to develop Project Icebreaker in only five months. Demos of Project Icebreaker can be seen at LinuxWorld San Francisco in booth #410 from August 15-17.
